The Foundation is an exciting development within the Trust that aims to make a difference to the lives of those who are unable to access our core services so we can share our knowledge and expertise to those who need it the most.
The Foundation enables The Disabilities Trust to share its expertise and knowledge through research and the piloting of new ideas. Our project work is designed to initiate and enhance good practice and direct or influence policy within our areas of expertise - brain injury, learning disabilities, autism and physical disabilities.

The hidden disability
At any one time, at least 100,000 people in the UK are living with long term disabilities as a result of a brain injury and every year in England and Wales, a further 700,000 people attend accident and emergency (A&E) as a result of a head injury. Of these head injuries, 90% are considered minor.
Due to the often 'mild' nature of the injury, a resulting brain injury may never have been treated or the individual themselves may not even notice any immediate or significant changes; yet the resulting impairments can have a 'strong' impact.
If left unsupported, seemingly small impairments such as poor memory, inappropriate behavior or poor communication skills can lead to problems sustaining a job, a home or relationships….and in severe cases lead to social exclusion.
So often called the hidden disability; we are now seeing very visible results within the homeless population and criminal justice system. We are also now embarking on research with ex-service personnel.
Funding
The Foundation and its projects are funded by The Disabilities Trust, with additional funding from external (fundraised) resources for key projects to support our growing portfolio of services.
We do not charge the people we directly support. We are here to extend The Trust's services to those who cannot access our core services.

In 2015 we were delighted to win the 'Disability' category at The Charity Awards for the work of the Foundation in supporting prisoners and homeless people who have sustained a brain injury.
