New state-of-the-art brain injury hospital in York

Our specialist brain injury hospital in York will open later in 2023 at the Chocolate Works in York . This will be a flagship service for The Disabilities Trust, to replace our current brain injury hospital at York House.

We are proud to have served the region at York House for many years, and with this new, world-class facility, we will be able help even more people with a brain injury. It will offer state-of-the-art facilities and high quality neurobehavioral rehabilitation for adults with complex needs following a brain injury, to help people to take part in life fully and to live independent lives wherever possible.

We are excited to announce the following features:

• Ground-breaking design across two floors, with four wards and step-down flats.
• Dedicated support and therapy areas and outdoor facilities, including rooftop gardens.
• Assisted technology, designed to improve ability and day-to-day life, including personalised smart screens to remind patients about appointments and planned activities for the day, as well as digital signage.
• Virtual and augmented reality technology is planned, to assist with care pathways, so that people can experience everyday life situations, such as using cash machines.
• Sensor technology to increase safety and improve staff efficiency, using 3D infrared rays to alert staff to falls and other incidents or emergencies.

Irene Sobowale, Chief Executive at The Disabilities Trust, said: “The opening of our new specialist healthcare facility is set to transform the lives of many people who, until now, have found that their needs for personalised rehabilitation aren’t being met.

"This new hospital will be a flagship for innovation - and will create a benchmark for several brain injury hospitals and rehabilitation centres in the UK that The Disabilities Trust is planning to open over the next few years, helping people living with brain injury regain skills they have lost.”
